Matchstick Patterns

This activity explores linear functions generated by matchstick patterns. Learners explore patterns made up of matchsticks, enter their results into a spreadsheet and are then able to explore the relationships graphically. They are encouraged to use a notes page to record their findings.

Function Machines

The function machines on the tns file allow for a variety of activities around the theme of functions. The tns files allow for various investigations, both individual and class. Examples include finding equivalent functions, predicting outputs for more complex functions and exploring inverse functions.

Sequences

This activity allows learners to hypothesise and check formulae for sequences. By looking at the differences between terms of a sequence, learners can use calculator and spreadsheet pages to find a formula to match the terms.

Sums of Series

This activity is a challenging investigation of the sum of a series of fractions. As well as using the calculator application to explore the sum, learners are introduced to the sigma notation and encouraged to graph the sequence of nth sums.

Introduction to Trigonometry

This activity has been designed to allow learners to investigate the sine ratio. Learners can work independently with animated tns files which demonstrate the sine ratio in a right angled triangle and look at the calculation of missing sides.

Square Triangles

This is a challenging activity that enables learners to investigate a dissection of a square. It exploits all five applications and is rich in opportunities! Learners are lead through an investigation into the relative sizes of sections of a square after it has been dissected. They use spreadsheets and graphs to identify the relationship between two of the shapes formed.

Transformations

This activity has been designed to allow learners to discover the combined effects of a translation, rotation and reflection. Learners can see the effect of the three transformations, by using the animation provided, and alter the vector, angle of rotation and mirror line.

Four Fours

This exercise in BIDMAS/BODMAS allows learners to explore calculations using just four 4s. The tns file has calculator, notes and lists and spreadsheet pages to allow learners to create and check calculations with answers from 1 to 100. The challenge to achieve all of the target numbers leads students to investigate a wide range of operations.

Trial and Improvement

This activity allows learners to investigate the solution to an equation by trial and improvement. Learners are led through multiple representations of the approximate solution of a quadratic equation using the spreadsheet and graphing applications. The form of the quadratic is introduced using the data and statistics graphing facility.

Lift Off

Real life data is used to get learners to identify similarities and differences between two sets of data for the capacities of lifts in the UK and Europe. The two sets of data are compared using separate scatter graphs and boxplots. Learners are encouraged to find the lines of best fit. Extra data can be added to the spreadsheet.

Compare Boxplots

This activity encourages learners to create boxplots to compare data sets. The tns file gives five different data sets that learners can analyse using the Data and Statistics application, describing their findings in Notes pages.
