Solution 40455: Troubleshooting a TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS calculator that continuously reboots or is not functioning properly.
What troubleshooting steps can I try if my TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS calculator continuously reboots or is not functioning properly?
Please Note: If your TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS calculator will not turn on please instead refer to Solution 39297.
If the TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS calculator is not functioning properly or continuously rebooting, please follow the steps below:
1) Press the reset button on the back of the calculator. (Please Note: Resetting the calculator will cause unsaved data to be lost and erase all data entered into Scratchpad.)
2) Hold down the reset button for 5 seconds. Release the reset button, press and hold the [doc] [enter] and [EE] keys, and press and release the [on] key.
The calculator will display a menu with the following maintenance options:
1. Format File System – This will delete the user’s documents, but will not delete the OS.
2. Delete OS – The operating system will be deleted without deleting any documents.
0. Reboot – No changes are made, the calculator restarts
3) Delete the OS by pressing [2] then on the new menu [8] and finally [0] to reboot the calculator. After completing this step you will need to reinstall the OS.
4) Re-enter the maintenance menu by holding down the reset button for 5 seconds. Release the reset button, press and hold the [doc] [enter] and [EE] keys, and press and release the [on] key.
5) Format the file system by pressing [1] then on the new menu [8] and finally [0] to reboot the calculator.
Please Note: Steps 6 and 7 should only be followed if the TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS calculator is continuously rebooting:
6) Attempt to charge the calculator by connecting to a wall adapter or Docking Station to charge for at least 5 minutes before attempting to turn on.
Please Note: If you are using a wall charger, make sure you are using the TI wall charger that came with your calculator or other UL-certified USB charger rated for at least 1 amp (usually written as “1A” or “1000 mA”). To determine whether your charger is UL-certified, flip it over to the inside, and read the label. Look for the UL stamp, and confirm that it states that it is 1000 mA or higher.
7) If you have access to another working TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS you can try removing the battery from the working calculator and swap the battery with the rebooting calculator and verify if this allow the calculator to stop continuously rebooting. If it does please contact TI-Cares for options available to receive a replacement battery.
8) Reload the OS onto the calculator.
If any of the above steps allows the calculator to turn on or function properly please complete the following to verify the calculator is operating normally:
1) Press the [ctrl] then [on] to turn the calculator off. Then press [on]. Repeat this step 4 times, and verify the calculator can turn on and off normally.
2) Press [home] [5 Settings] [3 Handheld Setup] and change "Power Standby" to 1 minute. Then press [enter]. Wait 1 minute for the calculator to go to power standby, and then press [on] to verify the calculator turns on.
Please Note: After this step, you may want to press [home] [5 Settings] [3 Handheld Setup] and change "Power Standby" back to the default or other setting.
